Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
