The English along with Wales Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools play out according to the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
