Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
